Two notable exhibits of work by N.H. Living Treasures:

Eric Carle Museum Hosting Tomie dePaola Retrospective
In celebration of Tomie dePaola’s 75th birthday, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Mass., is organizing a major retrospective of his career: Drawings from the Heart: Tomie dePaola Turns 75. The exhibition will be on view from July 3 to November 1, 2009 and will feature a series of events and as well as the opportunity to meet and talk with Tomie dePaola. Curated by Barbara Elleman, renowned authority of children’s literature and biographer of Tomie dePaola, the exhibition will comprise works from his most popular books such as Strega Nona: An Old Story, Bill and Pete to the Rescue, and Big Anthony and the Magic Ring as well as examples of his non-picture book art.

A resident of New London, N.H., dePaola has been recognized with the Caldecott Honor Award, the Newbery Honor Award and the New Hampshire Living Treasure Governor’s Arts Award. For details about the exhibit, visit www.carlemuseum.org/dePaola/

St. Kieran Arts Center Retrospective Honors Robert Hughes
St. Kieran Arts Center is Berlin, N.H, is hosting a large-scale, retrospective art exhibition honoring and celebrating the life and works of sculptor, woodcut artist and master teacher Robert Hughes. The exhibit opens Saturday, July 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. with guest speakers at 2. Featuring more than 100 art pieces from over 22 collectors, the exhibition is a one-of-a-tribute to the life’s work of one of the North Country’s most beloved and respected artists on the fifth anniversary of his death.

Hughes was born in 1915 in Providence, R.I. and graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1939. After college he moved to Berlin, New Hampshire where he began his 43-year teaching career in the town's public schools. In the 1960s, he worked as a graphic designer and received a John Hays Fellowship. In acknowledgment of his impact on Berlin High School's Art Department, Hughes was named the State of New Hampshire Teacher of the Year in 1975. In 1989, The Rhode Island School of Design honored Hughes with the Alumni of the Year award. In 1991 the State of New Hampshire honored him again as Living Treasure at the biennial Governors Arts Awards. In the same year he was featured on New Hampshire Crossroads and in the documentary film "The City that Trees Built."
